Information for Traditional Photographers

If you are a traditional photographer you are shooting film. At the time of writing (but, as we know, things change fast) film is generally better than digital.

For us to print from film we first have to digitize or scan it. Of course you can do this yourself but all scanners are not created equal. For transparencies or negatives we use a Hasselblad Imacon scanner which is generally considered to be the best scanner on the market.

There is a reason we paid $17,000 for our scanner: it has an incredible DMAX which means it captures amazing detail, especially in the shadow areas. If you want to scan your work yourself you can buy a slide or film scanner from Minolta, Nikon or Microtek which, while not as good as our Imacon, give pretty good results. In general terms flat bed scanners don't do a great job on transmissive media. If in doubt e-mail us and tell us what you are scanning with and we will give you our honest opinion.

We can also scan from photographic prints.

Once we have your file, negative, slide, transparency or print we will look at it before we do anything and give you our honest opinion of how we think it will turn out.

If you are sending anything to us we recommend that you make a copy of it.
