Deciding on Your Edition An artist can declare an edition of any size that he or she chooses - we work with artists whose edition sizes range from 5 to 250. If you are working with a gallery they may have suggestions or requirements regarding edition size; otherwise you may just pick a number yourself based on your projected sales and what return you want to get on your prints. We can make suggestions about edition sizes based on what we have seen other artists do, but they are only that - suggestions. Ultimately you, the artist, need to be comfortable with the edition size you declare. Let's say you are working with an edition of 100. An artist can choose to make additional prints as artists’ proofs; normally this is no more than 10% of the edition. So you could declare that it is an edition of 100 prints numbered 1 – 100 and 10 artists' proofs numbered A thru J. We would number the back of the print in pencil with our print number followed by the month and year followed by the number. For example it could be A2232LL0906/1 or for an artists' proof A2232LL0906/APa. If you choose to do 10% Printers proofs (in addition to the artists' proofs) they would be numbered A2232LL0906/PPi (roman numerals i – x). We keep edition records on all our prints and once you have printed out an edition we cannot keep producing those prints.
